| Eh, sorry for posting another longish thing~ debate –noun 1.a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints. 2. a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers. -verb 1. To engage in argument by discussing opposing points. ~~dictionary.com - KITTY <3 =) wrote:
- 1) The topic or statement must be
debatable. You cannot have a debate over whether pedophilia is a good thing, nor can you have a debate over whether two and two really makes four; therefore, make your topic one in which both sides can debate. Also remember that opinions are not debates; you must argue your case. - An additional note is to try and avoid fandom debates, such as "Twilight vs. Harry Potter" unless there is actually something to debate about.
2) Explain your topic or statement. Please avoid broad statements -- be specific so everyone can understand what the issue is. Explain what you are talking about and the different aspects of it.
3) Research! You help yourself when you are familiar with the topic you are debating, and you help others understand and get an idea of what the topic is.
4) While there is no minimum word count, we suggest the initial post to be around 100 words.
5) Try and make your title closely related to the topic of the debate to show people what is going to be discussed.
When replying to a debate:
1) Explain your opinion. Do not just go "I agree," and leave it at that. Explain what aspects you agree with and what you disagree with, and, most importantly, justify yourself.
2) Research and give evidence. Of course evidence is not always needed, but if you say "so and so people die because of this," make sure you've got your facts right and say where you got this information from.
3) Remember to be civil and polite. Take into consideration that these are other people's opinions and beliefs you are arguing about, so be careful. However, also remember that debates can get heated and that you musn't be too sensitive to some of the comments.
4) We already have a rule about typing in proper English. Please keep this in mind as it is especially hard to read long, complicated debating posts when there is no grammar nor any paragraphing.
5) Try and read the last two pages to make sure you don't simply repeat what someone else has said previously.
~~Artemis Fowl Confidential forums I feel that the debate forums should follow the AFC guidelines more...To debate isn't really just saying, "lol i agree too!!" or "i voted". The essence of debating isn't in AI! To debate is to research the topic YOU feel strongly about. I mean yes, there's actually a lot of younger members here, than AFC, but still, AFC's age range is from 12-19 ish. Here's around 8-16. It's almost the same. Debating is not just agreeing with someone and that's considered a post... >_> Some members post "thanks" when someone votes in their topic! What is this?! The person introducing the debate topic should give details and their opinion in the first post to let others know more and be able to decide and give their own opinions. I'm sorry in advance before I say what I'm about to say. Making a topic for "do you like jb or not!" isn't an ideal debating topic. The other topics are actually ok. But for the Justin Beiber one...It would probably be more appropriate if the initial post stated why you should like J.B. or not. Or give much more information. <=that's for a lot of the topics too. Starting out a topic saying, do you like this or this better? Could be the first sentence posted. Then list reasons why you like/agree with whatever you're talking about. Debates are supposed to be discussions... So yeah. 'Nother post from Lighty. I think these are the things that bothered me last year when I joined this forum.

| Long post doesn't matter . It is helpful that matters - Quote :

I used to do it . left it now . i suggest to make one poll forum too So maybe the polls like harry vs twilight , Matter of J.,B would fit . And maybe debates should not have polls . It maybe like that may have an end date to join some thing . for eg Non. veg eating is bad or not .(this probably has many facts for positive and negative so this can be a good example .) So say ending date is 30th april . They will make a group . non veg is good = Mystic_gohan , madman , (other users] non veg is bad = (users) And then they will start the debate on 30th april . (madman just an example )

| Yeah see, something like poll forum would be a great idea to put other types of threads in because those threads aren't threads you could really discuss about...
And yes, something like that would be a great topic~ It doesn't necessarily need a due date though I think, and really anyone could participate.
