| let's see... a fantasy story...but not quite so in the beginning... - Spoiler:
Chapter 1
Eva was reading a book when someone squeezed her
shoulders. ‘What do you want?’ she asked, knowing that it was her friend,
Claire.
‘Thought I could sneak up on you but you’re too smart.
Was wondering if you would like to come with me to the library in our street.’
Eva got up, put the book into her pocket, slipped on her
sandals and went out with Claire into the sunshine.
‘You know, those clouds over there are coming here pretty
fast!’ Eva pointed to huge, black clouds in the east. Claire nodded.
‘Want to stay at home or at the library?’ she asked Eva.
‘Library. At least we can be there, reading whatever
books we want to read,’ she grinned.
‘They rushed to the library just in time. The rain poured
down in torrents. ‘Wow! That was close!’ Eva exclaimed looking outside the
window to watch the pouring rain. ‘People out there will be drenched in a few
seconds.’ Claire agreed and continued to watch the rain with awe.
‘There never has been a huge storm as like this since the
year around 1950’ said a voice behind them. They turned around to see the old,
wrinkled librarian. ‘And two boys watched it in awe just like you two,’
chuckled the old woman, ‘that brings back memories.’
The two girls, curious, asked her further. ‘Were you here
in the library too?’ Eva managed to ask.
The old woman nodded. ‘Saw the storm with my own eyes.
Back then, I was still a little girl, around your age maybe. The storm was huge
and we, youngsters watched it with awe.’
Just then, there was a flash of lightning. Some
youngsters screamed. Eva was clutching Claire, not knowing it. ‘It happened
just like that,’ continued the old woman.
A cold shiver went down Eva’s spine. ‘You mean, it’s
repeating itself again?’
and i sincerely hope that no one will steal it or even think of it..

Chapter 2
‘I don’t know...seems like it. The boys got tired
watching it and they went to the book-shelves and picked out a great many books
to read.Ah!those boys were book-worms!’ continued the old woman, not noticing
that the girls were looking at the old woman with wide open eyes. ‘When I
looked back to the boys, they were gone! Poof! Vanished!’
‘Did they come back?’ asked Claire, quite breathless.
‘Yes they did after a minute or so. I didn’t pay attention to them until I
heard them say things about jewels and elves. They took me aside and told me of
their adventures. They said that they had gone into another world where elves
and other things lived. It had seemed like a year to them but they were
surprised to see that they were back at the same place, same time with the same
people. Back then, I had listened to them with wide open eyes, and believed
them. Then I forgot about it in a matter of years.’ The old woman smiled. ‘You
two bought that incident back to me again. You’re just like those two boys who
are now in Heaven.’
‘May we see the book?’ asked Eva.
‘Alas! We never knew what book they went into. They took
many books to read that’s why. Now, go and read some books. I must have quite
bored you.’
The girls shook their heads. ‘It was wonderful! Thank you
for telling us about this. Now, we must go and read books like you said.’
They scampered off and the old woman smiled. ‘It brings
back memories!’ and continued to call on her memories of the old times.
Meanwhile, the two girls were picking out various books
discussing the story. ‘I wished it happened to us!’ whispered Eva. ‘As if! It
will never happen, least of all to us. But it’s still a wish,’ replied Claire.
They continued to look through books, mostly fiction. ‘I’m wondering what book
they got into, if it’s true that is,’ Eva said with a sigh. ‘This one looks
interesting, “Gomery’s Enchanting Tales”,’ Eva took out a big, fat book.
‘Yea,’ Claire peered over Eva’s shoulder.
‘I’m going to borrow it if I don’t finish reading it
here,’ vowed Eva, putting the book on the desk. She sat down and began to
devour it. Claire peered over her shoulder. Just then a light came from the
book and they watched in wonder and shock as it surrounded them.

Chapter 3
They vanished right after that. No one was
around to see them vanish. But Sean, a friend of theirs came around the corner
to ask them something and was most surprised to see no one there. ‘That’s strange!
I just heard them talk a minute ago. I must have been imagining things again.’
he thought and went back.
Meanwhile
the girls were lying on soft, green grass. ‘How did we come here?’ asked Eva.
Their memories were completely blank about the light coming out. ‘Looks like we
have to get help,’ Eva said, getting up and brushing away the dust. ‘This is
most strange,’ said Claire, looking at the trees and flowers. ‘I don’t think
there are flowers like this where we come from.’ Eva looked around and agreed.
‘I believe we’ve landed in the world inside, “Gomery’s Enchanting Tales!”’ she
exclaimed, with a delighted look.
Just
then, a tall, pretty thing with long silver hair and rich blue eyes, dressed in
glistening armour appeared before them. They called it a thing because they
didn’t know how to describe it…it was not a human and it was not an animal. It
had long, pointed ears and long legs and feet, big eyes and a little nose.
‘Did
you call?’ she asked in a sweet voice, bowing her head slightly.
‘I
don’t think so…’ Claire replied, brushing the dust off.
‘But
you sure can help us around. What’s your name? I’m Eva and this is Claire,’ Eva
continued, not wanting her to disappear.
‘You
can call me Saber. Nice to meet you too. Judging from your looks and clothes, I
guess you’re not from here.’
‘Yes,
we are not from here. We come from another country or world,’ Claire replied,
looking around.
‘Then
follow me. I’ll show you around,’ the elf or fairy said to them. ‘First, this
is Gomery. It is a large land where
fairies and elves live…I’m an elf. There are two kings and queens…one king and
queen for elves and another for the fairies. We don’t fight. We live in harmony
though there are some battles with the giants from the West some of the time,’
Saber paused. ‘The difference between fairies and elves is that fairies have
wings while we do not and also female fairies are not good in combat. Though
they are not good in combat, they are excellent in making up plans and watching
for enemies. Elves on the other hand are good in combat as well as studies.
Unfortunately, we are not much in sewing and weaving and house-work.’
‘Okay.
So where is the palace?’ Eva asked Saber.
‘Come.
I'll show you then.’
She
took off. Although elves did not wings, they could jump high and run fast.
Saber jumped and reached for a branch of a tree, caught it and swung herself
up. Eva and Claire jumped too, caught a very low branch and climbed up to join
Saber.
‘You
are a very good jumper,’ Claire grinned.
‘And
both of you are good in climbing. I didn’t expect you to climb up so fast.’
‘It’s
because this land’s air is nice and fresh,’ replied Eva, sniffing the air.
‘Thank
you,’ Saber replied, pleased. Then she started to point out all the places.

‘Now, over there in the
East is the “Tower of the Great Beings”.
Near to that is a large tree which is about more than a century old and was
planted by the late king and queen. In the South over there, is a river, long
and whose waters are so clear and sweet. Then, over the bank of that river, “Pedrase”, there is a field of flowers
which are the queen’s main joy. Then in the West, before the realms of the
Giants, there is a swamp which is home to different small animals. Then in the
East there is a sea called “Logus”
where there are some mermaids and the ship-port.’ Saber stopped, and climbed
higher. ‘Follow me,’ she called down.
The
two girls climbed up and joined Saber at the top of the tree. There were places
to sit on. ‘Near the sea is a large forest and in the middle of that forest is
a palace. There are two palaces here. The kings and queens usually go to the
one in the palace called “Lunar Towers”
during the summer. It is called Lunar Towers because the full moon can be seen
between the two towers of the castle in a clear night.”
‘So
where is the other palace?’ Claire asked.
‘It’s
beyond the field of flowers near the mountains. There it is. Can you see it?’ Saber
pointed to a magnificent palace whose one tower glistened in the sunlight.
Claire and Eva gasped with awe. ‘It’s beautiful. Are the kings and queens
living there right now?’
Saber
nodded. ‘That is called “The Palace of Diamonds.”
I live there too.’
The
two girls looked at her in shock and delight. ‘You mean you’re a queen?’ Claire
asked breathlessly.
Saber
laughed. ‘No. I’m the elf king’s niece. His brother’s daughter.’
Eva
gazed at her in delight. ‘Cool!!!Is it fun there? Are the kings and queens good?
Kind? Tell me everything.’
Saber
laughed her cheerful laugh. ‘I’ll show you. It’s better that telling you. Come,
follow me.’
She climbed down the tree and walked for a
little length then stopped outside a huge tree. There was a big stone beside it
and Saber stepped behind it and disappeared. The two girls stared at in
surprise. Claire pulled Eva and went around the stone. There was a hole there,
behind the stone beneath a bush. ‘Come on,’ Claire urged.
They
crawled in and found themselves in a long passage. It was quite dark and it
took a while for their eyes to adjust to it. A little way off, they saw Saber
who was holding a burning stick or torch. They followed her and stopped outside
a fork. ‘If we go this side,’ Saber waved to the left side which ran downwards,
‘we’ll come out near the sea. Then if we follow this right one, we’ll arrive at
a fork again. We take the right side.’ The continued to walk on, gazing at the
cravings on the walls of the passages.
They
soon came to another fork and the girls followed Saber into the left passage. ‘The
right passage leads to the river. This passage is shorter and it leads right
outside the palace. Don’t tell anyone of this passage.’ the two girls nodded.
They
soon came to a stop. There was a huge wall in front of Saber, who was in the
lead, which blocked the passage. Saber ran her fingers down a thin line carved
into the stone itself, barely visible and then inserted her hand into a little
hole in the wall. She turned around her hand and the wall opened. ‘There’s a
little handle inside that needs to be turned,’ she explained to the awe-struck
girls.’
They
went into the new passage which was smaller. They soon came to a stop. ‘Look
above,’ Saber pointed. The girls looked above and saw a hole. Saber climbed up
and disappeared. The girls heard a scream then silence.

| Jestico + Whiles and Glenn Howells Architects are working together on plans by Countryside Properties and Fresh Wharf developments for a new project in the London area of Barking. The 4.4 hectare site is currently brownfield and sits to the east to the North Circular Road with the remains of Barking Abbey to its north east, much of which was cannibalised to build a new royal palace at Dartford. Currently at the outline stage of the planning process, the scheme involves a series of buildings up to 22 storeys in height that will accommodate up to 950 new apartments, plus shops, restaurants, pubs and bars, a 4 metre tall green wall, 1,616 square metres of space for some sort of community facility, and 418 spaces for residents to park their cars plus 16 visitor spaces. The scheme is a major scaling down of the previous one with the number of residential units reduced from 1,186 and the retail scaled down from 3,015 square metres. At the same time the community use has been uplifted from 1,525 square metres and the major design change is the removal of the block in the centre of the site to open it up more and changes made to the building heights elsewhere to scale back the visual density, and whilst the amount of space in the scheme is still above that recommended by the London Plan, in this case the planning authorities have no beef with it. In removing the central block there is now a core public space that the rest of the project can be properly arranged around with a series of private and public courtyards set off it between the buildings. The scheme is however still some way off detailed design work and will need to be fully approved in outline before that can happen, meaning one of the key pieces of regeneration in Barking is still years away from getting off the ground.
